About Ngukurr Arts

The Ngukurr Arts enterprise is a venue for artists to work, and to display their paintings for sale. It is a program run through Yugul Mangi CDEP (Community Development Employment Program).

During the four years Ngukurr Arts has been operating the artists have developed their skills, and have gained confidence and strength from their stories. History and traditional corroboree stories are painted with a passion and enthusiasm for the cultural aspect of putting their stories onto canvas. There is also a new wave of young artists with a passion for painting country in color.

Over the years a few artists from Ngukurr have won awards and presented solo exhibitions in the capital cities. The work of some of these artists is available through Ngukurr Arts. However the future is with the group of emerging artists who are working as a Community based group. The first exhibition for this group was held in Melbourne – it was a co-operative effort of fifty five works from twenty artists. The exhibition was titled Big Stories From Ngukurr – it sold out on opening night.

The art style of Ngukurr is as distinctive and varied as the artists. Acrylic on canvas is the most popular medium – bright acrylics are favored by some artists, others prefer the traditional ochre tones.

About Ngukurr

Ngukurr is an Aboriginal Community built on hilly ground alongside The Roper River in South East Arnhem Land, NT. It is three hours by road from Katherine and approximately seven hours by road from Darwin. During The Wet Season, which can spread from December to May, access is by air to/from Ngukurr, or boat from Roper Bar.

Ngukurr people are culturally strong with deep connections to their country and the dreamings. The landscape is prolific Top End growth, billabongs and wetlands.

In the early 1900’s the area was called Roper River Mission. Most of the senior artists at Ngukurr attended the mission school and have many stories to tell of life in the old mission days.
